Mound of Glory

The Mound of Glory ((ベラルーシ語:Курган Славы)) is a memorial complex honouring Soviet soldiers who fought during World War II, located 21 km from Minsk, Belarus on the Moscow Highway. Designed by O.Stakhovich 〔("About Belarus" ), at the Belarus govt. website〕 and sculpted by A.Bembel, it was established in 1969 on the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus during Operation Bagration (1944).
== History of Mound of Glory ==
On the place of Mound of Glory during the Operation Bagration in 1944, Soviet army surrounded Hitler's grouping of 105 thousands soldiers. This event was named as Minsk's Pocket. On July 11, 1944 Hitler's grouping was finally bitten. It was one more step on the way of liberation of Belarus.
On August 18, 1966, government of BSSR decided to construct monument Mound of Glory in the honor of soviet soldiers and great victory. Construction started in November 1967 and has been finished in 1969. Thousands of people took part in the construction of the monument by bringing a handful of earth.
